Agenda Items

It was, one supposes, a night like any other night. Still, a palpable tingle of anticipation could be felt in the sultry summer air. It was WEFT’s August Music Committee meeting, and there would be beer and peanuts afterward!!

PRESENT at 6:30 PM were the august Chair of the Committee, Jay Eychaner, and his faithful vassals Kristen (last name?), Rhonda Hunter (with her fiancé Dan), Steve Severinghaus, Jason greenly, David Washington, Mark Morentz, Zhenya Tumanova, and John Wason. Excused were Jason Finkelman, Amelia Bowen, Nick Henry, and Trisha McCarthy.

There was no Secretary, Jeff Nicholson-Owens having resigned. And a certain tension filled the room as the valiant members considered the dreaded issue of QUORUM. Could they VOTE?

Quorum

Chairman Jay consulted his list of Music Committee members. He counted 19 names. Only 9 members were present in the room. Was that 50%? No! Even a FOOL could see that! Could a half member be found? It seemed preposterous. Could one of the nine presently present members DIVIDE, through some process of cell mitosis, and become TWO members for purposes of quorum? It appeared achievable, but desirable only as a last resort.

Wait! Jeff N-O had RESIGNED, had he not, signaling his clear intention and desire to NOT be counted as a Music Committee member even though he still technically met the requirements of membership? Much discussion ensued. Just as consensus was reached to....behold! The cavalry had arrived! Federico "Mambo Italiano" Bassetti, Dawn Owens-Nicholson, and Kevin Elliot all trooped in at around 6:40 PM. Several minutes later Lowell Miller anticlimactically arrived. We could VOTE! Yay! And John Wason grudgingly agreed to take minutes THIS ONE TIME. The more delicate nuances of membership and quorum would, it appeared, be reserved for a later discussion.

Old Minutes

The minutes of the July 17, 2006 meeting were approved without notable opposition by Naysayers and their Fellow Travellers.

Secretary

With regard to the issue of replacing the essentially irreplaceable Jeff N-O as Music Committee Secretary, it was mentioned that two recent trainees had expressed a tentative interest in the position. Meanwhile we shall have to rotate the duties...or something.

Absent Genre Director Reports

Jay summarized the monthly report from the excused Blues genre director, Caroline "Lady Red" Princehouse. As Blues people do, she is keeping on keeping on with the music processing and charting.

Bob Drew's Blues

The illustrious Bobby D., who is wheelchair-bound and a credit to his race, still can’t reach over half of the blues CDs on the shelves, including those on the bottom three shelves. Jay had met the previous Friday to discuss the issue with Lady Red, Mick "Big Bad" Woolf, and Janet "What? Pluto No Longer a Planet??" Lowry. Proposal: Organize 3 genres of music horizontally across 4 sets of shelves rather than vertically as is done now, with Loud Rock on the top shelves, Blues in the middle, and Goth-Industrial on the very bottom two or three shelves. Discussion, but no apparent consensus, and no vote.

It was mentioned that Wheelz is also in a wheelchair; would we need to reorganize Rock and Indy Rock along similar linez? Someone said that Wheelz has been bringing his own music for yearz.

Proposal: Meeting between Chairman Jay, Jason greenly (Loud Rock), Kristen (Goth/Industrial), and Lady Red (Blues) to discuss the reorganization of the shelves on the south wall. Consensed, in the opinion and observation of this lowly amanuensis.

RPM Genre Director

We need one. David Washington volunteers. He avows that he has the time and energy to do the work. Fede will continue to help with processing the music. Motion (Jason greenly/Kevin Elliot) to approve David as RPM genre director. Unanimously approved. This lowly amanuensis suggests that David could also do Gospel. The room erupts in a chorus of titters and snickers and chuckles and guffaws. Apparently Gospel is not taken seriously at WEFT.

Agenda Additions

New Music Requirement

(John W.). Wason wants clarification of the 25% new music requirement. Jason greenly avers that the relevant rule reads "WEFT music", not "music from any source as long as the airshifter thinks it’s new". He further suggests that, in the event of non-compliance by an airshifter, the steps are:

  1. Genre Director warns airshifter.
  2. If still no compliance, Music Committee Chair warns airshifter.
  3. If still no compliance, Programming Committee deals with airshifter.

Multi-Genre CDs

(David W.) David wants to know what we should do with CDs that cross our inevitably arbitrary classification schema. Various approaches are discussed. No one clearly "correct" approach.

Community Service Intransigence

(Zhenya). Zhenya has observed a court-ordered community service person being signed in and out by Don Mercer, and ripping Blues CDs using the WEFT computer. Jay will discuss the matter with Mick.

Adjournment

Motion to adjourn (Jason g./Kevin E.) raucously approved.

Action Items

  1. Discuss community service situation with Mick. (JAY)
  2. Meet about Wheelz, Bobby D., reorganization of music CDs. (JAY, JASON g., KRISTEN, LADY RED)
  3. Get more labels and colored electrical tape. (JAY - my addition)
  4. Recruit a new Secretary candidate. (ALL - my addition)
  5. Keep on keeping on. (ALL - a basic Law of the Universe)
