Differences: Back Studio vs. the former Front Studio

  1. Each channel has an ON/OFF button pair at the bottom. "ON" must be pressed to put the channel into the mix.
  2. The PGM (Program) and AUD (Audition) bus buttons are above the sliders on each channel. PGM and AUD can be selected (pressed in) at the same time. If you are cueing CDs by listening on AUD, for example, you must manually depress PGM so that your auditioned input does not go into the broadcast mix!
  3. Each channel has a CUE button at the bottom of the slider. Pressing the CUE button sends that channel's signal through the speaker that is built into the studio board. Pressing the CUE button also removes the signal from the PGM bus. Therefore, you can use CUE to audition tracks without switching the PGM or AUD buttons at all. Also, you can assign CUE to the headphones.
  4. The CD players may be wired so that if you have the CD player on pause and the CD channel on the board is "OFF", pressing the "ON" button on the board channel will then start the CD playing as if you pressed PLAY. Getting used to this when cueing up CDs will be your biggest adjustment between studios. If instead the CD channel is left ON, and then you pause the CD, the CD will stay paused, and you can start the CD by pressing the PLAY button on the CD player. (However, the CD player will start playing from pause whenever its board channel is switched from OFF to ON.) NOTE: Only the CD players are wired this way. To start the MiniDisc decks or the Cassette deck playing, you need to press PLAY on the respective device. Pressing the respective board channel ON will not start an MD or CASS.
  5. When first powered on, the CD players default to SINGLE track mode. In SINGLE track mode, the CD player will stop each time after playing one track. To turn off single-track mode, press the PLAY MODE button on the CD player. It will then display CONT. and play tracks continuously (to the end of the CD). Pressing PLAY MODE switches between single and continuous play modes.

Additional information:

  1. The two right-most channels, SEL1 & SEL2, have multiple inputs that correspond to the banks of buttons labeled SELECTOR 1 and SELECTOR 2 to the right of the sliders. The two call-in phone lines are wired into these (one on each). The CASSette deck is wired into an input on SEL1. Each channel may only be assigned to one such input at a time.
  2. The MiniDisc decks and the Cassette decks are wired to record from the PGM bus mix of the back studio board. (This is the ANALOG input switch setting on the MiniDisc decks.) Each such device has an input level control knob(s) on the front panel to adjust the recording level. NOTE: The MiniDisc decks can record in Stereo, Mono, and two additional MD Long-Play formats. You can select the RECord mode via the Edit menu sequence of the MD. When recording in MONO, only the left channel (top) level bar shows in the display. To see it, you may need to lean down or sit on the floor. (Sorry, but true.)
  3. MD 2 can record from MD 1 optically/digitally by switching the Input Selector switch on MD 2 to "DIGITAL 1". This is still a real-time audio transfer. This method transfers track marks from the original to the copy, but does not transfer track titles. PLEASE remember to switch the MD 2 input selector back to ANALOG after you have finished a DIGITAL dub.
  4. The FRONT studio mix (its Program bus signal) is provided as one of the back studio board inputs. [More info at a future date...]
